Aqua Anio Vetus, the first raised aqueduct assembled in Rome, began supplying the men and women living in the hills with water in 273 BC, though they had depended on natural springs up till then. Over this time period, there were only two other innovations capable of offering water to higher areas, subterranean wells and cisterns, which accumulated rainwater. Starting in the sixteenth century, a unique approach was introduced, using Acqua Vergine’s subterranean sectors to provide water to Pincian Hill. Pozzi, or manholes, were made at standard stretches along the aqueduct’s channel. Whilst these manholes were provided to make it less difficult to manage the aqueduct, it was also possible to use buckets to remove water from the channel, which was done by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he acquired the property in 1543 to his death in 1552. It seems that, the rainwater cistern on his property wasn’t adequate to meet his needs. Thankfully, the aqueduct sat directly below his residence, and he had a shaft established to give him accessibility.
