Aspects of Garden Sculpture in Archaic Greece
Aspects of Garden Sculpture in Archaic Greece Up right up until the Archaic Greeks created the first freestanding statuary, a noteworthy triumph, carvings had mainly been done in walls and pillars as reliefs. Kouros figures, statues of adolescent, good-looking male or female (kore) Greeks, made up the majority of the sculptures.
Thought of by Greeks to characterize beauty, the kouroi were created into stiff, forward facing poses with one foot outstretched, and the male statues were usually nude, muscular, and fit. In around 650 BC, the variations of the kouroi became life-sized. The Archaic period was an extraordinary time of change for the Greeks as they extended into new modes of government, produced unique expressions of art, and gained knowledge of the men and women and cultures outside of Greece. However, the Greek civilization was not slowed down by these battles.

Hundreds of ancient Greek records were translated into Latin under the auspices of the scholarly Pope Nicholas V, who led the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455. It was important for him to embellish the city of Rome to make it worthy of being known as the capital of the Christian world. In 1453 the Pope commissioned the reconstruction of the Aqua Vergine, an historic Roman aqueduct which had carried clean drinking water into the city from eight miles away. A mostra, a monumental commemorative fountain constructed by ancient Romans to mark the point of arrival of an aqueduct, was a custom which was restored by Nicholas V. The Trevi Fountain now occupies the space previously filled with a wall fountain crafted by Leon Battista Albert, an architect employed by the Pope. The Trevi Fountain as well as the well-known baroque fountains located in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona were eventually supplied with water from the altered aqueduct he had rebuilt.
