Inventors of the First Water Fountains

Inventors of the First Water Fountains Water feature designers were multi-talented people from the 16th to the later part of the 18th century, often working as architects, sculptors, artisans, engineers and highly educated scholars all in one person. Leonardo da Vinci, a Renaissance artist, was notable as an creative genius, inventor and scientific master. The forces of nature guided him to analyze the qualities and motion of water, and due to his fascination, he methodically documented his observations in his now famed notebooks. Coupling imaginativeness with hydraulic and landscaping mastery, early Italian water feature designers changed private villa settings into brilliant water displays loaded with emblematic meaning and natural elegance.Inventors First Water Fountains 488428082117704.jpg Known for his virtuosity in archeology, architecture and garden design, Pirro Ligorio, the humanist, delivered the vision behind the magnificence in Tivoli. Other water fountain engineers, masterminding the fantastic water marbles, water features and water antics for the various estates near Florence, were tried and tested in humanist subjects and time-honored scientific readings.

The Magificent First Masterpieces by Bernini

Magificent First Masterpieces Bernini 352328970132188.jpg The Magificent First Masterpieces by Bernini The Barcaccia, a beautiful fountain constructed at the base of the Trinita dei Monti in Piaza di Spagna, was Bernini's earliest water fountain. This area is still filled with Roman locals and visitors who enjoy exchanging gossip or going over the day's news. The streets neighboring his water fountain have come to be one of the city’s most trendy gathering places, something which would certainly have pleased Bernini himself. Dating back to around 1630, Pope Urbano VIII mandated what was to be the earliest fountain of the artist's career. Depicted in the fountain's design is a great ship slowly sinking into the Mediterranean Sea. According to 16th century texts, a great flood of the Tevere covered the entire area in water, an event which was memorialized by the eye-catching fountain. Absenting himself from Italy only once in his life for a long-lasting time period, in 1665 Bernini traveled to France.

Rome’s First Water Delivery Systems

Rome’s First Water Delivery Systems Rome’s very first elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was built in 273 BC; prior to that, residents living at higher elevations had to depend on natural creeks for their water. Outside of these aqueducts and springs, wells and rainwater-collecting cisterns were the only technologies readily available at the time to supply water to spots of higher elevation.Rome’s First Water Delivery Systems 069471839554237.jpg Beginning in the sixteenth century, a new method was introduced, using Acqua Vergine’s subterranean segments to generate water to Pincian Hill. During its original building and construction, pozzi (or manholes) were placed at set intervals alongside the aqueduct’s channel. While these manholes were created to make it less difficult to manage the aqueduct, it was also possible to use containers to extract water from the channel, which was exercised by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he purchased the property in 1543 to his death in 1552. The cistern he had made to gather rainwater wasn’t sufficient to meet his water demands. That is when he made the decision to create an access point to the aqueduct that ran directly below his property.
