The Godfather Of Rome's Fountains In Rome’s city center, there are countless easily recognized public fountains. One of the most distinguished sculptors and artists of the 17th century, Gian Lorenzo Bernini planned, created and built almost all of them. Bernini's father, a renowned Florentine sculptor, mentored his young son, and they ultimately moved to Rome, in order to fully express their art, primarily in the form of public water fountains and water features. An excellent worker, the young Bernini received compliments and the backing of various popes and influential designers. He was originally renowned for his sculpture. An expert in ancient Greek architecture, he utilized this knowledge as a starting point and melded it gracefully with Roman marble, most remarkably in the Vatican. He was influenced by many a great artists, however, Michelangelo had the biggest effect on his work.

Archaic Greek Artistry: Outdoor Statuary Up until the Archaic Greeks created the 1st freestanding sculpture, a remarkable achievement, carvings had chiefly been done in walls and pillars as reliefs. Kouros figures, statues of young, good-looking male or female (kore) Greeks, made up the bulk of the statues. The kouroi, regarded by the Greeks to portray beauty, had one foot stretched out of a rigid forward-facing pose and the male statues were always nude, with a strong, strong shape. Life-sized versions of the kouroi appeared beginning in 650 BC. A substantial time of transformation for the Greeks, the Archaic period helped bring about newer forms of government, expressions of artwork, and a greater appreciation of people and customs outside of Greece. Conflicts like The Arcadian wars, the Spartan invasion of Samos, and other wars among city-states are suggestive of the disruptive nature of the time, which was similar to other periods of historical upset. However, these conflicts did not significantly hinder the advancement of the Greek civilization.
