The Defining Characteristics of Classic Greek Statuary Archaic Greeks were renowned for developing the first freestanding statuary; up till then, most carvings were formed out of walls and pillars as reliefs. A mostra, a monumental celebratory fountain built by ancient Romans to mark the point of entry of an aqueduct, was a custom which was revived by Nicholas V. The architect Leon Battista Alberti was commissioned by the Pope to put up a wall fountain where we now find the Trevi Fountain. Adjustments and extensions, included in the repaired aqueduct, eventually supplied the Trevi Fountain and the well-known baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona with the necessary water supply.
