Rome’s 1st elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was built in 273 BC; prior to that, inhabitants living at higher elevations had to depend on natural streams for their water. When aqueducts or springs weren’t available, people dwelling at raised elevations turned to water drawn from underground or rainwater, which was made possible by wells and cisterns. Starting in the sixteenth century, a brand new method was introduced, using Acqua Vergine’s subterranean portions to provide water to Pincian Hill. Pozzi, or manholes, were built at standard intervals along the aqueduct’s channel. Though they were initially designed to make it possible to service the aqueduct, Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi began using the manholes to accumulate water from the channel, starting when he purchased the property in 1543. The cistern he had built to collect rainwater wasn’t sufficient to meet his water needs. That is when he made a decision to create an access point to the aqueduct that ran underneath his residence.

The keep is thought to date from the time of William the Conqueror.
