At the time of the conquest, the Normans surpassed the Anglo-Saxons in building design and cultivation. But yet there was no time for home life, domesticated design, and adornment until the Normans had overcome the whole region. Castles were more fundamental constructions and often constructed on blustery hills, where their tenants devoted both time and space to exercising offense and defense, while monasteries were large stone buildings, mostly positioned in the widest, most fruitful hollows. The tranquil practice of gardening was unlikely in these dismal bastions. The early Anglo-Norman style of architecture is represented in Berkeley Castle, which is most likely the most untouched sample we have. The keep is said to date from William the Conqueror's time period. A big terrace intended for strolling and as a way to stop enemies from mining below the walls runs around the building. One of these terraces, a charming bowling green, is covered grass and flanked by an ancient yew hedge cut into the figure of crude battlements.

An internationally recognized leader in hydraulics in the later part of the 1500's was a French water fountain engineer, whose name has been lost to history. With Royal mandates in Brussels, London and Germany, he started his career in Italy, developing know-how in garden design and grottoes with built-in and ingenious water hydraulics. In France, near the closure of his life, he wrote “The Principle of Moving Forces”, a book which became the fundamental text on hydraulic mechanics and engineering. Explaining modern hydraulic technologies, the publication also modified key hydraulic discoveries of classical antiquity. Archimedes, the creator of the water screw, had his work showcased and these included a mechanical way to move water. Sunlight heating up water in two containers unseen in a room adjacent to an decorative water fountain was shown in one illustration. Actuating the fountain is heated liquid that expands and rises to seal up the water lines. Designs for pumps, water wheels, water attributes and outdoor ponds are also mentioned in the publication.
