Characteristics of Garden Statuary in Archaic Greece
Characteristics of Garden Statuary in Archaic Greece Up until the Archaic Greeks provided the very first freestanding statuary, a noteworthy achievement, carvings had mainly been done in walls and pillars as reliefs. For the most part the statues, or kouros figures, were of young and nice-looking male or female (kore) Greeks. The kouroi were seen by the Greeks to embody beauty and were sculpted with one foot leading and an uncompromising stiffness to their forward-facing poses; the male statues were always strapping, brawny, and unclothed. Life-sized versions of the kouroi appeared beginning in 650 BC. The Archaic period was an incredible point of transformation for the Greeks as they grew into new forms of government, formed fresh expressions of art, and achieved knowledge of the people and cultures outside of Greece. But in spite of the conflicts, the Greek civilization continued to progress, unabated.
