"Primitive" Greek Art: Garden Statuary

"Primitive" Greek Art: Garden Statuary The initial freestanding sculpture was improved by the Archaic Greeks, a distinguished success since until then the only carvings in existence were reliefs cut into walls and columns. Kouros figures, statues of adolescent, handsome male or female (kore) Greeks, made up the bulk of the sculptures. Representing beauty to the Greeks, the kouroi were created to look rigid and typically had foot forward; the males were vigorous, strong, and naked. Around 650 BC, life-sized versions of the kouroi began to be observed. The Archaic period was an extraordinary time of change for the Greeks as they extended into new forms of government, produced fresh expressions of art, and achieved insights of the men and women and cultures outside of Greece. Conflicts like The Arcadian wars, the Spartan invasion of Samos, and other wars between city-states are indicative of the disruptive nature of the time period, which was similar to other periods of historical disturbance. However, these conflicts did not significantly hinder the advancement of the Greek civilization.

Bernini's Early Masterpieces

Bernini's Early Masterpieces The Barcaccia, Bernini's first water fountain, is a magnificent chef d'oeuvre built at the foot of the Trinita dei Monti in Piaza di Spagna. To this day, you will see Roman residents and vacation goers filling this spot to revel in chit chatter and being among other people. One of the city’s most fashionable meeting places are the streets surrounding Bernini's fountain, which would undoubtedly have brought a smile to the great Bernini. In around 1630, Pope Urbano VIII helped Bernini launch his career with the construction of his first water fountain. Depicted in the fountain's design is a great ship gradually sinking into the Mediterranean Sea.Bernini's Early Masterpieces 468030002.jpg The great flooding of the Tevere that blanketed the whole region with water in the 16th was memorialized by this momentous fountain as recorded by documents dating back to this period.
