Early Water Supply Techniques in Rome Prior to 273, when the very first elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was made in Roma, residents who resided on hillsides had to travel further down to get their water from natural sources. Outside of these aqueducts and springs, wells and rainwater-collecting cisterns were the only technologies available at the time to supply water to segments of high elevation. From the early sixteenth century, water was routed to Pincian Hill by using the subterranean channel of Acqua Vergine. As originally constructed, the aqueduct was provided along the length of its channel with pozzi (manholes) constructed at regular intervals. The manholes made it less demanding to thoroughly clean the channel, but it was also possible to use buckets to remove water from the aqueduct, as we viewed with Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi when he owned the property from 1543 to 1552, the year he died. It seems that, the rainwater cistern on his property wasn’t enough to satisfy his needs. By using an orifice to the aqueduct that ran below his property, he was able to meet his water desires.
