The Outcome of the Norman Conquest on Anglo-Saxon Landscaping The Anglo-Saxon way of life was significantly changed by the appearance of the Normans in the later eleventh century. At the time of the conquest, the Normans surpassed the Anglo-Saxons in building design and cultivation. The calm method of gardening was impractical in these dismal bastions. Berkeley Castle, maybe the most pristine style of the early Anglo-Norman style of architecture, still exists today. It is said that the keep was created during William the Conqueror's time. A spacious terrace meant for strolling and as a way to stop attackers from mining under the walls runs about the building. On one of these parapets is a scenic bowling green covered in grass and surrounded by an aged hedge of yew that has been shaped into coarse battlements.

Contributing to the development of scientific technology were the printed papers and illustrated books of the time. They were also the primary means of transmitting practical hydraulic information and water fountain design ideas throughout Europe. In the late 1500's, a French water fountain designer (whose name has been lost) was the internationally renowned hydraulics pioneer. His competence in developing gardens and grottoes with incorporated and imaginative water fountains began in Italy and with mandates in Brussels, London and Germany. In France, near the closure of his lifetime, he wrote “The Principle of Moving Forces”, a publication which turned into the essential text on hydraulic technology and engineering. Classical antiquity hydraulic developments were outlined as well as revisions to essential classical antiquity hydraulic breakthroughs in the publication. Dominant among these works were those of Archimedes, the developer of the water screw, a mechanized way of moving water. Sunlight heating up water in a couple of containers unseen in a room adjacent to an ornamental fountain was displayed in one illustration. The hot liquid expands and subsequently ascends and closes the water lines consequently activating the water feature.
