Aqueducts: The Solution to Rome's Water Troubles
Aqueducts: The Solution to Rome's Water Troubles Aqua Anio Vetus, the first raised aqueduct assembled in Rome, commenced providing the individuals living in the hills with water in 273 BC, though they had counted on natural springs up until then. Outside of these aqueducts and springs, wells and rainwater-collecting cisterns were the only technological innovations around at the time to supply water to segments of higher elevation. In the early sixteenth century, the city began to use the water that flowed below the ground through Acqua Vergine to deliver water to Pincian Hill. All through the length of the aqueduct’s passage were pozzi, or manholes, that gave access.
Though they were initially designed to make it possible to service the aqueduct, Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi began using the manholes to accumulate water from the channel, commencing when he purchased the property in 1543. Though the cardinal also had a cistern to accumulate rainwater, it couldn't supply enough water. That is when he decided to create an access point to the aqueduct that ran below his residential property.
