Dating back to around 1630, Pope Urbano VIII commissioned what was to be the very first water fountain of the artist's career. The fountain’s central theme is based on a massive vessel slowly sinking into the Mediterranean. The great flooding of the Tevere that covered the whole region with water in the 16th was commemorated by this momentous fountain as recorded by reports dating back to this period. In what turned out to be his one and only prolonged absence from Italy, Bernini {journeyed | traveled] to France in 1665.
Gian Bernini's Fountains
Gian Bernini's Fountains In Rome’s city center, there are countless easily recognized water features.
Pretty much all of them were planned, architected and built by one of the greatest sculptors and designers of the 17th century, Gian Lorenzo Bernini. He was furthermore a city architect, in addition to his abilities as a water fountain engineer, and records of his life's work are evident throughout the streets of Rome. Bernini's father, a renowned Florentine sculptor, mentored his young son, and they ultimately moved to Rome, in order to fully express their art, primarily in the form of public water fountains and water features. The juvenile Bernini was an exceptional worker and earned compliments and backing of significant painters as well as popes. His sculpture was initially his claim to glory. An authority in classic Greek architecture, he used this knowledge as a foundation and melded it seamlessly with Roman marble, most notably in the Vatican. Though many artists had an influence on his work, Michelangelo had the most profound effect.
Archaic Greek Artwork: Large Statuary
Archaic Greek Artwork: Large Statuary The initial freestanding statuary was designed by the Archaic Greeks, a notable achievement since until then the sole carvings in existence were reliefs cut into walls and pillars.
Most of the freestanding statues were of young, winsome male or female (kore) Greeks and are called kouros figures. The kouroi, considered by the Greeks to exemplify beauty, had one foot extended out of a rigid forward-facing pose and the male statues were always nude, with a powerful, sturdy shape. In 650 BC, life-sized models of the kouroi began to be observed. During the Archaic period, a great time of change, the Greeks were evolving new types of government, expressions of art, and a greater awareness of people and cultures outside Greece. The Arcadian wars, the Spartan invasion of Samos, and other wars between city-states are good examples of the types of clashes that arose frequently, which is consistent with other times of historical change.
