The Dissemination of Fountain Design Knowledge
The Dissemination of Fountain Design Knowledge Instrumental to the advancement of scientific technology were the printed letters and illustrated books of the day. They were also the primary means of transferring useful hydraulic facts and fountain design ideas throughout Europe. A globally recognized innovator in hydraulics in the late 1500's was a French fountain engineer, whose name has been lost to history. His experience in designing landscapes and grottoes with incorporated and ingenious water fountains began in Italy and with commissions in Brussels, London and Germany. He authored a publication titled “The Principles of Moving Forces” toward the conclusion of his lifetime while in France which came to be the essential tome on hydraulic technology and engineering. Modernizing key hydraulic discoveries of classical antiquity, the book also highlights modern hydraulic technologies. Archimedes, the creator of the water screw, had his work showcased and these integrated a mechanized way to move water. Sunlight warming liquid in a pair of containers hidden in a room next to an ornamental fountain was displayed in one illustration. What occurs is the heated liquid expanded, rises and locks up the conduits heading to the water feature, consequently leading to stimulation.
Designs for pumps, water wheels, water attributes and garden ponds are also covered in the guide.
Bernini’s Very First Italian Water Fountains
Bernini’s Very First Italian Water Fountains
Bernini's earliest water fountain, named Barcaccia, is a breath taking work of art found at the bottom of the Trinita dei Monti in Piaza di Spagna. To this day, you will find Roman residents and vacation goers occupying this spot to revel in chit chatter and being among other people. Today, the city streets surrounding Bernini's fountain are a trendy place where people go to meet, something which the artist would have been pleased to learn. In about 1630, the great artist built the very first fountain of his career at the behest of Pope Ubano VIII. Illustrated in the fountain's design is a large ship gradually sinking into the Mediterranean Sea. Period reports dating back to the 16th century show that the fountain was built as a monument to those who lost their lives in the great flooding of the Tevere. In 1665 Bernini traveled to France, in what was to be his only extended absence from Italy.
