A Concise History of the Early Public Water Features As initially developed, fountains were crafted to be functional, directing water from streams or aqueducts to the citizens of cities and settlements, where the water could be utilized for cooking food, washing, and drinking. A source of water higher in elevation than the fountain was needed to pressurize the flow and send water spraying from the fountain's spout, a system without equal until the late nineteenth century. The elegance and wonder of fountains make them perfect for historical memorials. When you encounter a fountain at present, that is not what the very first water fountains looked like.
The very first recognized water fountain was a rock basin created that was used as a receptacle for drinking water and ceremonial functions. Embellishing Rome and making it the worthy capital of the Christian world was at the center of his objectives. In 1453 the Pope commissioned the reconstruction of the Aqua Vergine, an ancient Roman aqueduct which had carried clean drinking water into the city from eight miles away. The ancient Roman custom of marking the entry point of an aqueduct with an imposing celebratory fountain, also known as a mostra, was restored by Nicholas V. The architect Leon Battista Alberti was directed by the Pope to construct a wall fountain where we now find the Trevi Fountain. The aqueduct he had refurbished included modifications and extensions which eventually allowed it to supply water to the Trevi Fountain as well as the renowned baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona.
