Aspects of Garden Statues in Archaic Greece
Aspects of Garden Statues in Archaic Greece The Archaic Greeks built the very first freestanding statuary, an amazing achievement as most sculptures up until then had been reliefs cut into walls and pillars. For the most part the statues, or kouros figures, were of adolescent and attractive male or female (kore) Greeks. Symbolizing beauty to the Greeks, the kouroi were crafted to appear rigid and commonly had foot in front; the males were vigorous, sturdy, and naked. In about 650 BC, the differences of the kouroi became life-sized. Throughout the Archaic period, a big time of changes, the Greeks were developing new forms of government, expressions of art, and a larger comprehension of people and cultures outside Greece.
Equivalent to other moments of historical unrest, conflicts were commonplace, and there were battles between city-states like The Arcadian wars, the Spartan invasion of Samos.
The History of Outdoor Garden Fountains
The History of Outdoor Garden Fountains The translation of hundreds of classical Greek texts into Latin was commissioned by the learned Pope Nicholas V who led the Church in Rome from 1397 till 1455. Embellishing Rome and making it the worthy capital of the Christian world was at the heart of his ambitions. In 1453 the Pope instigated the repairing of the Aqua Vergine, an ancient Roman aqueduct which had carried clean drinking water into the city from eight miles away. The ancient Roman tradition of marking the entry point of an aqueduct with an imposing celebratory fountain, also known as a mostra, was restored by Nicholas V. The present-day location of the Trevi Fountain was once occupied by a wall fountain commissioned by the Pope and constructed by the architect Leon Battista Alberti. Adjustments and extensions, included in the repaired aqueduct, eventually provided the Trevi Fountain and the well-known baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona with the necessary water supply.
