Characteristics of Garden Sculpture in Archaic Greece The Archaic Greeks manufactured the 1st freestanding statuary, an impressive achievement as most sculptures up until then had been reliefs cut into walls and pillars. Most of these freestanding sculptures were what is known as kouros figures, statues of young, attractive male or female (kore) Greeks. The kouroi, viewed as by the Greeks to symbolize beauty, had one foot stretched out of a rigid forward-facing pose and the male figurines were always nude, with a strong, sturdy shape. The kouroi grew to be life-sized starting in 650 BC. The Archaic period was an awesome point of change for the Greeks as they grew into new forms of government, formed unique expressions of art, and gained insights of the people and cultures outside of Greece. Conflicts like The Arcadian wars, the Spartan invasion of Samos, and other wars between city-states are indicatory of the tumultuous nature of the time, which was similar to other periods of historical upset. However, these conflicts did not significantly hinder the advancement of the Greek civilization.
