Garden Fountains Recorded by History The water from springs and other sources was originally delivered to the occupants of nearby communities and cities via water fountains, whose purpose was mainly practical, not artistic.
In the days before electrical power, the spray of fountains was driven by gravity alone, commonly using an aqueduct or water resource located far away in the nearby hills. Inspiring and impressive, large water fountains have been built as memorials in nearly all civilizations. If you saw the 1st fountains, you probably would not recognize them as fountains. Basic stone basins crafted from local material were the first fountains, used for spiritual purposes and drinking water. The original stone basins are presumed to be from around 2000 B.C.. The force of gravity was the energy source that controlled the earliest water fountains. Positioned near reservoirs or springs, the functional public water fountains supplied the local residents with fresh drinking water. Fountains with ornate decoration began to appear in Rome in about 6 B.C., commonly gods and creatures, made with stone or copper-base alloy. The Romans had an intricate system of aqueducts that supplied the water for the numerous fountains that were situated throughout the urban center.
