The Water Features

The Water Features As originally developed, water fountains were crafted to be practical, directing water from streams or aqueducts to the inhabitants of towns and villages, where the water could be used for cooking food, cleaning, and drinking. A supply of water higher in elevation than the fountain was necessary to pressurize the movement and send water squirting from the fountain's nozzle, a technology without equal until the later half of the 19th century. Inspiring and spectacular, big water fountains have been constructed as memorials in nearly all cultures.Water Features 337315423876000.jpg The common fountains of modern times bear little resemblance to the very first water fountains. The first recognized water fountain was a stone basin created that served as a receptacle for drinking water and ceremonial purposes. Rock basins are believed to have been first used around 2,000 BC. Gravity was the power source that operated the initial water fountains. The placement of the fountains was influenced by the water source, which is why you’ll commonly find them along aqueducts, canals, or rivers. The people of Rome began creating elaborate fountains in 6 BC, most of which were metallic or stone masks of animals and mythological characters. Water for the open fountains of Rome was delivered to the city via a complex system of water aqueducts.
