For the most part the statues, or kouros figures, were of adolescent and nice-looking male or female (kore) Greeks. The kouroi were believed by the Greeks to embody beauty and were sculpted with one foot leading and an uncompromising rigidity to their forward-facing poses; the male statues were always strapping, sinewy, and unclothed. In 650 BC, life-sized versions of the kouroi began to be observed. A massive era of transformation for the Greeks, the Archaic period helped bring about more forms of government, expressions of artwork, and a higher comprehension of people and customs outside of Greece. Throughout this time and other periods of historical tumult, encounters often occurred, most notably battles fought amongst city-states such as the Arcadian wars and the Spartan invasion of Samos.
