The Source of Today's Outdoor Garden Fountains
The Source of Today's Outdoor Garden Fountains The translation of hundreds of classic Greek texts into Latin was commissioned by the scholarly Pope Nicholas V who ruled the Church in Rome from 1397 until 1455. In order to make Rome worthy of being the capital of the Christian world, the Pope decided to enhance the beauty of the city. Restoration of the Acqua Vergine, a desolate Roman aqueduct which had transported clean drinking water into the city from eight miles away, began in 1453 at the behest of the Pope. The ancient Roman tradition of building an awe-inspiring commemorative fountain at the location where an aqueduct arrived, also known as a mostra, was restored by Nicholas V. At the bidding of the Pope, architect Leon Battista Alberti undertook the construction of a wall fountain in the place where we now find the Trevi Fountain. Changes and extensions, included in the restored aqueduct, eventually provided the Trevi Fountain and the well-known baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona with the necessary water supply. The Distribution of Water Fountain Engineering Knowledge in Europe
The Distribution of Water Fountain Engineering Knowledge in Europe Instrumental to the development of scientific technology were the published papers and illustrated publications of the day. They were also the main means of transmitting useful hydraulic information and fountain design ideas all through Europe. In the later part of the 1500's, a French fountain architect (whose name has been lost) was the globally renowned hydraulics pioneer. His experience in designing landscapes and grottoes with built-in and imaginative water fountains began in Italy and with mandates in Brussels, London and Germany. He wrote a book entitled “The Principles of Moving Forces” towards the conclusion of his life while in France which came to be the basic book on hydraulic mechanics and engineering.
