Statues As a Staple of Vintage Art in Historic Greece The first freestanding statuary was improved by the Archaic Greeks, a distinguished achievement since until then the only carvings in existence were reliefs cut into walls and pillars.
Most of these freestanding sculptures were what is known as kouros figures, statues of young, attractive male or female (kore) Greeks. Symbolizing beauty to the Greeks, the kouroi were designed to look stiff and typically had foot forward; the males were healthy, powerful, and naked. Around 650 BC, life-sized forms of the kouroi began to be observed. A massive age of improvement for the Greeks, the Archaic period helped bring about more forms of government, expressions of artwork, and a greater appreciation of people and cultures outside of Greece. The Arcadian conflicts, the Spartan penetration of Samos, and other wars between city-states are good examples of the sorts of battles that arose frequently, which is consistent with other times of historical change.
