The Original Public Water Features

The Original Public Water FeaturesOriginal Public Water Features 029420626304444499.jpg As initially developed, water fountains were designed to be functional, guiding water from creeks or aqueducts to the inhabitants of cities and villages, where the water could be used for cooking, washing, and drinking. In the years before electrical power, the spray of fountains was powered by gravity only, commonly using an aqueduct or water source located far away in the nearby hills. The splendor and spectacle of fountains make them perfect for historical monuments. If you saw the earliest fountains, you probably would not recognize them as fountains. A natural stone basin, crafted from rock, was the very first fountain, used for holding water for drinking and spiritual functions. 2000 B.C. is when the oldest known stone fountain basins were actually used. Early fountains used in ancient civilizations depended on gravity to regulate the flow of water through the fountain. Drinking water was provided by public fountains, long before fountains became decorative public monuments, as attractive as they are functional. Fountains with ornate decoration started to show up in Rome in approx. 6 BC, usually gods and wildlife, made with stone or copper-base alloy. A well-engineered system of reservoirs and aqueducts kept Rome's public water fountains supplied with fresh water.
