Acqua Vergine: The Answer to Rome's Water Challenges Aqua Anio Vetus, the first raised aqueduct founded in Rome, began providing the people living in the hills with water in 273 BC, although they had depended on natural springs up till then. During this time period, there were only two other techniques capable of supplying water to elevated areas, subterranean wells and cisterns, which gathered rainwater. To offer water to Pincian Hill in the early 16th century, they employed the emerging technique of redirecting the circulation from the Acqua Vergine aqueduct’s underground network.
During its original construction, pozzi (or manholes) were installed at set intervals alongside the aqueduct’s channel. The manholes made it more straightforward to thoroughly clean the channel, but it was also possible to use buckets to remove water from the aqueduct, as we viewed with Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi when he operated the property from 1543 to 1552, the year he passed away. It seems that, the rainwater cistern on his property wasn’t sufficient to meet his needs. To provide himself with a more streamlined means to assemble water, he had one of the manholes opened, providing him access to the aqueduct below his residence.

Hundreds of ancient Greek documents were translated into Latin under the auspices of the scholarly Pope Nicholas V, who ruled the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455. Beautifying Rome and making it the worthy capital of the Christian world was at the heart of his objectives. Reconstruction of the Acqua Vergine, a ruined Roman aqueduct which had transported clean drinking water into the city from eight miles away, began in 1453 at the bidding of the Pope. The ancient Roman tradition of building an imposing commemorative fountain at the location where an aqueduct arrived, also known as a mostra, was restored by Nicholas V. The present-day location of the Trevi Fountain was previously occupied by a wall fountain commissioned by the Pope and built by the architect Leon Battista Alberti. The aqueduct he had reconditioned included modifications and extensions which eventually allowed it to supply water to the Trevi Fountain as well as the renowned baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona.
