Gian Lorenzo Bernini, one of the most brilliant sculptors and artists of the 17th century developed, created and produced almost all of them. Also a city builder, he had abilities as a fountain developer, and marks of his life's work are evident throughout the roads of Rome. Eventually moving to Rome to fully show their art, chiefly in the shape of public water fountains, Bernini’s father, a renowned Florentine sculptor, guided his young son. The juvenile Bernini was an exceptional employee and attained compliments and patronage of significant painters as well as popes. At the beginning he was renowned for his sculptural expertise. An authority in classic Greek architecture, he used this knowledge as a starting point and melded it gracefully with Roman marble, most notably in the Vatican. He was affected by many a great artists, however, Michelangelo had the biggest effect on his work.

"Primitive" Greek Artistry: Garden Statuary Archaic Greeks were renowned for developing the first freestanding statuary; up until then, most carvings were constructed out of walls and pillars as reliefs. Most of these freestanding sculptures were what is known as kouros figures, statues of young, attractive male or female (kore) Greeks. The kouroi, viewed as by the Greeks to exemplify beauty, had one foot extended out of a rigid forward-facing posture and the male statues were regularly unclothed, with a powerful, sturdy shape. Life-sized versions of the kouroi appeared beginning in 650 BC. Throughout the Archaic period, a big time of change, the Greeks were developing new forms of government, expressions of art, and a larger comprehension of people and cultures outside Greece. Similar to other moments of historical unrest, conflicts were common, and there were struggles between city-states like The Arcadian wars, the Spartan invasion of Samos.
