Anglo-Saxon Landscapes During the Norman Conquest
Anglo-Saxon Landscapes During the Norman Conquest The introduction of the Normans in the second half of the 11th century considerably modified The Anglo-Saxon ways of living. Engineering and horticulture were attributes that the Normans excelled in, trumping that of the Anglo-Saxons at the time of the occupation. Still, home life, household architecture, and decoration were out of the question until the Normans taken over the general population.
Most often designed upon windy peaks, castles were fundamental structures that allowed their inhabitants to spend time and space to offensive and defensive schemes, while monasteries were rambling stone buildings commonly added in only the most fecund, extensive valleys. The calm practice of gardening was not viable in these bleak bastions. Berkeley Castle, maybe the most pristine style of the early Anglo-Norman style of architecture, still exists today. The keep is thought to date from the time of William the Conqueror. As a strategy of deterring assailants from tunneling under the walls, an immense terrace surrounds the building. On one of these parapets is a picturesque bowling green covered in grass and enclosed by an aged hedge of yew that has been designed into coarse battlements.
Aqueducts: The Answer to Rome's Water Troubles
Aqueducts: The Answer to Rome's Water Troubles With the development of the first elevated aqueduct in Rome, the Aqua Anio Vetus in 273 BC, people who lived on the city’s hills no longer had to rely exclusively on naturally-occurring spring water for their requirements. During this time period, there were only two other innovations capable of delivering water to higher areas, subterranean wells and cisterns, which accumulated rainwater. To provide water to Pincian Hill in the early sixteenth century, they employed the brand-new approach of redirecting the flow from the Acqua Vergine aqueduct’s underground channel. Pozzi, or manholes, were made at standard intervals along the aqueduct’s channel. Whilst these manholes were manufactured to make it much easier to conserve the aqueduct, it was also possible to use buckets to remove water from the channel, which was employed by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he purchased the property in 1543 to his death in 1552. The cistern he had built to obtain rainwater wasn’t satisfactory to meet his water demands. That is when he decided to create an access point to the aqueduct that ran directly below his property.
