Acqua Vergine: The Solution to Rome's Water Problems
Acqua Vergine: The Solution to Rome's Water Problems Aqua Anio Vetus, the first raised aqueduct founded in Rome, started out supplying the people living in the hills with water in 273 BC, even though they had depended on natural springs up till then. Outside of these aqueducts and springs, wells and rainwater-collecting cisterns were the only technologies available at the time to supply water to locations of higher elevation. From the early sixteenth century, water was routed to Pincian Hill by using the subterranean channel of Acqua Vergine. The aqueduct’s channel was made available by pozzi, or manholes, that were situated along its length when it was initially constructed. Whilst these manholes were provided to make it simpler and easier to preserve the aqueduct, it was also possible to use containers to remove water from the channel, which was practiced by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he bought the property in 1543 to his death in 1552. It appears that, the rainwater cistern on his property wasn’t good enough to meet his needs. To give himself with a more streamlined way to assemble water, he had one of the manholes opened, providing him access to the aqueduct below his residence.A Small Garden Area?
