Original Water Delivery Solutions in Rome
Original Water Delivery Solutions in Rome Previous to 273, when the first elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was constructed in Rome, residents who lived on hillsides had to journey further down to collect their water from natural sources. Outside of these aqueducts and springs, wells and rainwater-collecting cisterns were the lone technological innovations available at the time to supply water to areas of higher elevation. Beginning in the sixteenth century, a newer strategy was introduced, using Acqua Vergine’s subterranean segments to supply water to Pincian Hill. As originally constructed, the aqueduct was provided along the length of its channel with pozzi (manholes) constructed at regular intervals. Whilst these manholes were manufactured to make it much easier to manage the aqueduct, it was also possible to use buckets to pull water from the channel, which was utilized by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he invested in the property in 1543 to his death in 1552. He didn’t get adequate water from the cistern that he had established on his property to collect rainwater.
