Previous to 273, when the very first elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was constructed in Rome, inhabitants who dwelled on hills had to go further down to get their water from natural sources. Outside of these aqueducts and springs, wells and rainwater-collecting cisterns were the lone technologies available at the time to supply water to spots of higher elevation. From the beginning of the sixteenth century, water was routed to Pincian Hill via the underground channel of Acqua Vergine. Through its original building and construction, pozzi (or manholes) were situated at set intervals alongside the aqueduct’s channel. Whilst these manholes were provided to make it less difficult to maintain the aqueduct, it was also possible to use containers to pull water from the channel, which was carried out by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he bought the property in 1543 to his passing in 1552. The cistern he had constructed to gather rainwater wasn’t satisfactory to meet his water requirements. That is when he made a decision to create an access point to the aqueduct that ran under his residential property.
