The Original Outdoor Public Fountains

The Original Outdoor Public Fountains Water fountains were originally practical in function, used to deliver water from canals or creeks to cities and hamlets, providing the residents with fresh water to drink, bathe, and prepare food with. A source of water higher in elevation than the fountain was needed to pressurize the movement and send water squirting from the fountain's nozzle, a system without equal until the late 19th century. The appeal and wonder of fountains make them perfect for traditional monuments. The contemporary fountains of modern times bear little resemblance to the first water fountains. Simple stone basins sculpted from local rock were the very first fountains, used for spiritual functions and drinking water.Original Outdoor Public Fountains 56593714.jpg 2000 BC is when the oldest known stone fountain basins were originally used. The jet of water emerging from small spouts was pressured by gravity, the sole power source creators had in those days. These ancient water fountains were built to be functional, commonly situated along reservoirs, streams and rivers to supply drinking water. The Romans began creating decorative fountains in 6 B.C., most of which were metallic or stone masks of creatures and mythological heroes. The Romans had an elaborate system of aqueducts that supplied the water for the many fountains that were situated throughout the urban center.

The Source of Modern Outdoor Garden Fountains

The Source of Modern Outdoor Garden Fountains The translation of hundreds of classical Greek texts into Latin was commissioned by the scholarly Pope Nicholas V who ruled the Church in Rome from 1397 until 1455.Source Modern Outdoor Garden Fountains 629807447.jpg In order to make Rome worthy of being the capital of the Christian world, the Pope decided to embellish the beauty of the city. In 1453 the Pope commissioned the rebuilding of the Aqua Vergine, an ancient Roman aqueduct which had carried clean drinking water into the city from eight miles away. The ancient Roman tradition of building an awe-inspiring commemorative fountain at the location where an aqueduct arrived, also known as a mostra, was resurrected by Nicholas V. The Trevi Fountain now occupies the area previously filled with a wall fountain crafted by Leon Battista Albert, an architect employed by the Pope. Changes and extensions, included in the restored aqueduct, eventually supplied the Trevi Fountain and the well-known baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona with the necessary water supply.
