Water Delivery Strategies in Early Rome
Water Delivery Strategies in Early Rome Prior to 273, when the 1st elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was constructed in Roma, residents who resided on hills had to travel further down to get their water from natural sources. When aqueducts or springs weren’t available, people living at raised elevations turned to water removed from underground or rainwater, which was made possible by wells and cisterns. From the beginning of the sixteenth century, water was routed to Pincian Hill by using the subterranean channel of Acqua Vergine. Throughout the length of the aqueduct’s channel were pozzi, or manholes, that gave entry. Whilst these manholes were created to make it much easier to sustain the aqueduct, it was also possible to use containers to extract water from the channel, which was done by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he purchased the property in 1543 to his passing in 1552. The cistern he had made to gather rainwater wasn’t sufficient to meet his water needs. Thankfully, the aqueduct sat under his property, and he had a shaft opened to give him access. Can Wall fountains Help Cleanse The Air?
