Original Water Delivery Solutions in Rome

Original Water Delivery Solutions in Rome Rome’s 1st raised aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was built in 273 BC; before that, residents residing at higher elevations had to rely on natural creeks for their water.Original Water Delivery Solutions Rome 691888024611196298.jpg Outside of these aqueducts and springs, wells and rainwater-collecting cisterns were the only technological innovations obtainable at the time to supply water to areas of higher elevation. In the early sixteenth century, the city began to utilize the water that ran underground through Acqua Vergine to furnish drinking water to Pincian Hill. As originally constructed, the aqueduct was provided along the length of its channel with pozzi (manholes) constructed at regular intervals. Although they were initially manufactured to make it possible to support the aqueduct, Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi started out using the manholes to accumulate water from the channel, commencing when he acquired the property in 1543. Reportedly, the rainwater cistern on his property wasn’t enough to satisfy his needs. Thankfully, the aqueduct sat under his property, and he had a shaft established to give him access.
