Aspects of Outdoor Sculpture in Archaic Greece
Aspects of Outdoor Sculpture in Archaic Greece The first freestanding statuary was improved by the Archaic Greeks, a recognized achievement since until then the only carvings in existence were reliefs cut into walls and pillars. For the most part the statues, or kouros figures, were of young and desirable male or female (kore) Greeks. The kouroi, viewed as by the Greeks to exemplify beauty, had one foot stretched out of a rigid forward-facing pose and the male statues were regularly nude, with a compelling, strong physique. The kouroi became life-sized starting in 650 BC. The Archaic period was tumultuous for the Greeks as they evolved into more sophisticated forms of federal government and art, and gained more information about the peoples and societies outside of Greece. During this time and other times of historical tumultuousness, clashes often took place, among them wars fought amongst city-states such as the Arcadian wars and the Spartan infiltration of Samos.
