An un-named French fountain developer was an internationally renowned hydraulic innovator in the late 1500's. By designing landscapes and grottoes with integrated and ingenious water features, he started off his profession in Italy by receiving imperial mandates in Brussels, London and Germany. The publication, “The Principles of Moving Forces,” authored towards the end of his lifetime in France, became the fundamental writing on hydraulic mechanics and engineering. Modernizing principal hydraulic findings of classical antiquity, the book also details modern hydraulic technologies. The water screw, a mechanical means to move water, and developed by Archimedes, was highlighted in the book. An ornamental water fountain with sunlight warming the water in two vessels stashed in an adjacent accommodation was shown in one illustration. The end result: the water fountain is activated by the heated water expanding and ascending up the conduits. Pumps, water wheels, water attributes and backyard pond styles are included in the text.
