Builders of the First Outside Garden Fountains
Fountain designers were multi-talented people from the 16th to the later part of the 18th century, often serving as architects, sculptors, artists, engineers and cultivated scholars all in one person. During the Renaissance, Leonardo da Vinci illustrated the artist as a creative genius, creator and scientific virtuoso. With his astounding curiosity about the forces of nature, he researched the attributes and movement of water and also carefully documented his findings in his now much celebrated notebooks. Remodeling private villa settings into imaginative water showcases packed of symbolic significance and natural beauty, early Italian fountain engineers coupled imagination with hydraulic and gardening knowledge. Known for his incredible skill in archeology, design and garden design, Pirro Ligorio, the humanist, delivered the vision behind the magnificence in Tivoli. Well versed in humanistic subjects as well as classic technical texts, some other fountain makers were masterminding the fascinating water marbles, water attributes and water pranks for the countless properties around Florence.

Did You Know How Mechanical Concepts of Water Fountains Became Known? Spreading practical hydraulic knowledge and water feature design ideas throughout Europe was accomplished with the printed papers and illustrated publications of the time.
An un-named French fountain developer was an internationally renowned hydraulic innovator in the late 1500's. By designing landscapes and grottoes with integrated and ingenious water features, he started off his profession in Italy by receiving imperial mandates in Brussels, London and Germany. The publication, “The Principles of Moving Forces,” authored towards the end of his lifetime in France, became the fundamental writing on hydraulic mechanics and engineering. Modernizing principal hydraulic findings of classical antiquity, the book also details modern hydraulic technologies. The water screw, a mechanical means to move water, and developed by Archimedes, was highlighted in the book. An ornamental water fountain with sunlight warming the water in two vessels stashed in an adjacent accommodation was shown in one illustration. The end result: the water fountain is activated by the heated water expanding and ascending up the conduits. Pumps, water wheels, water attributes and backyard pond styles are included in the text.
