Anglo-Saxon Landscapes at the Time of the Norman Conquest The arrival of the Normans in the second half of the 11th century irreparably transformed The Anglo-Saxon lifestyle. Engineering and horticulture were attributes that the Normans excelled in, trumping that of the Anglo-Saxons at the time of the occupation. However, there was no time for home life, domestic architecture, and adornment until the Normans had overcome the whole region. Castles were more basic designs and often constructed on blustery hills, where their people spent both time and space to practicing offense and defense, while monasteries were major stone buildings, regularly situated in the widest, most fertile hollows. The tranquil practice of gardening was unlikely in these dreary bastions. The finest specimen of the early Anglo-Norman style of architecture existent in modern times is Berkeley Castle. It is said that the keep was introduced during William the Conqueror's time. A large terrace recommended for strolling and as a means to stop attackers from mining below the walls runs around the building.
One of these terraces, a charming bowling green, is covered grass and flanked by an ancient yew hedge trimmed into the shape of crude battlements.
