"Primitive" Greek Art: Outdoor Statuary

"Primitive" Greek Art: Outdoor Statuary The initial freestanding sculpture was designed by the Archaic Greeks, a recognized accomplishment since until then the only carvings in existence were reliefs cut into walls and columns. Most of the freestanding statues were of youthful, winsome male or female (kore) Greeks and are known as kouros figures. The kouroi were believed by the Greeks to typify beauty and were sculpted with one foot leading and an uncompromising stiffness to their forward-facing poses; the male statues were always strapping, brawny, and naked. Life-sized versions of the kouroi appeared beginning in 650 BC. A massive age of modification for the Greeks, the Archaic period brought about newer forms of state, expressions of art, and a higher appreciation of people and cultures outside of Greece. Nevertheless, the Greek civilization was not slowed down by these fights.
