From Where Did Water Fountains Emerge? The translation of hundreds of classical Greek texts into Latin was commissioned by the learned Pope Nicholas V who led the Church in Rome from 1397 until 1455. It was important for him to beautify the city of Rome to make it worthy of being known as the capital of the Christian world. At the bidding of the Pope, the Aqua Vergine, a ruined aqueduct which had transported clean drinking water into Rome from eight miles away, was renovated starting in 1453. The Trevi Fountain now occupies the area previously filled with a wall fountain built by Leon Battista Albert, an architect employed by the Pope. The water which eventually furnished the Trevi Fountain as well as the acclaimed baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona flowed from the modified aqueduct which he had renovated.

The Effect of the Norman Conquest on Anglo-Saxon Garden Design The Anglo-Saxon way of life was drastically changed by the appearance of the Normans in the later eleventh century. The Normans were much better than the Anglo-Saxons at architecture and horticulture when they came into power. However the Normans had to pacify the overall territory before they could concentrate on home life, domestic architecture, and decoration. Monasteries and castles served different purposes, so while monasteries were enormous stone structures constructed in only the most fruitful, wide dales, castles were set upon blustery knolls where the occupants focused on learning offensive and defensive practices. The sterile fortresses did not provide for the calm avocation of horticulture. The early Anglo-Norman style of architecture is exemplified in Berkeley Castle, which is perhaps the most unscathed sample we have. The keep is said to date from the time of William the Conqueror. A massive terrace serves as a hindrance to invaders who would attempt to mine the walls of the building. A picturesque bowling green, covered in grass and enclosed by battlements cut out of an ancient yew hedge, creates one of the terraces.
