For the most part the statues, or kouros figures, were of adolescent and desirable male or female (kore) Greeks. Thought of by Greeks to embody skin care, the kouroi were created into stiff, forward facing poses with one foot outstretched, and the male statues were usually nude, well-built, and athletic. Around 650 BC, life-size forms of the kouroi began to be seen. During the Archaic time, a great time of change, the Greeks were evolving new forms of government, expressions of art, and a larger awareness of people and cultures outside Greece. But in spite of the conflicts, the Greek civilization went on to advance, unabated.

Bernini's First Masterpieces

Bernini's First Masterpieces The Barcaccia, Bernini's first fountain, is a magnificent chef d'oeuvre built at the base of the Trinita dei Monti in Piaza di Spagna. To this day, you will find Roman locals and vacation goers occupying this spot to revel in chit chatter and being among other people. One of the city’s most stylish meeting places are the streets surrounding Bernini's fountain, which would undoubtedly have brought a smile to the great Bernini. Dating back to around 1630, Pope Urbano VIII commissioned what was to be the earliest water fountain of the artist's career. Illustrated in the fountain's design is a large vessel slowly sinking into the Mediterranean Sea.Bernini's First Masterpieces 356700010501.jpg According to 16th century texts, a great flood of the Tevere covered the entire area in water, an event which was commemorated by the magnificent fountain. Absenting himself from Italy only once in his life for a lengthy time period, in 1665 Bernini traveled to France.
