Rome’s Ingenious Water Delivery Systems

Rome’s Ingenious Water Delivery Systems Previous to 273, when the very first elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was constructed in Rome, citizens who dwelled on hillsides had to go even further down to collect their water from natural sources. If people residing at higher elevations did not have access to springs or the aqueduct, they’d have to count on the remaining existing solutions of the time, cisterns that accumulated rainwater from the sky and subterranean wells that received the water from under ground. In the very early 16th century, the city began to utilize the water that flowed underground through Acqua Vergine to deliver drinking water to Pincian Hill.Rome’s Ingenious Water Delivery Systems 6928505392.jpg As originally constructed, the aqueduct was provided along the length of its channel with pozzi (manholes) constructed at regular intervals. Though they were initially developed to make it possible to support the aqueduct, Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi started using the manholes to accumulate water from the channel, commencing when he acquired the property in 1543. Apparently, the rainwater cistern on his property wasn’t enough to fulfill his needs. Through an orifice to the aqueduct that flowed under his property, he was in a position to satisfy his water demands.
