Water Transport Solutions in Historic Rome With the construction of the very first raised aqueduct in Rome, the Aqua Anio Vetus in 273 BC, people who lived on the city’s hillsides no longer had to rely entirely on naturally-occurring spring water for their needs. When aqueducts or springs weren’t available, people dwelling at greater elevations turned to water drawn from underground or rainwater, which was made available by wells and cisterns.
Beginning in the sixteenth century, a new system was introduced, using Acqua Vergine’s subterranean sections to generate water to Pincian Hill. During its initial construction, pozzi (or manholes) were installed at set intervals along the aqueduct’s channel.
