Bernini’s First Italian Water Fountains
Bernini’s First Italian Water Fountains
The Barcaccia, a stunning water fountain constructed at the base of the Trinita dei Monti in Piaza di Spagna, was Bernini's earliest water fountain. To this day, this spot is flooded with Roman locals and tourists alike who enjoy conversation and each other's company. Bernini would without a doubt have been happy to know that people still flock to what has become one the city's most fashionable areas, that around his amazing fountain. In about 1630, the great master built the first fountain of his career at the behest of Pope Ubano VIII. The fountain’s central motif is based on a massive boat slowly sinking into the Mediterranean. The great flooding of the Tevere that covered the whole region with water in the 16th was memorialized by this momentous fountain as recorded by reports dating back to this time. Absenting himself from Italy only once in his life for a long-lasting period of time, in 1665 Bernini traveled to France.
