The Godfather Of Roman Water Features There are many famous water fountains in Rome’s city center. One of the best ever sculptors and artists of the 17th century, almost all of them were designed, conceptualized and constructed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Also a city builder, he had abilities as a fountain designer, and traces of his life's work are noticeable throughout the avenues of Rome. A Chronicle of Landscape Fountains Pope Nicholas V, himself a well educated man, reigned the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455 during which time he commissioned many translations of ancient classic Greek texts into Latin. It was imperative for him to embellish the city of Rome to make it worthy of being called the capital of the Christian world.
Starting in 1453, the ruined ancient Roman aqueduct known as the Aqua Vergine which had brought clean drinking water into the city from eight miles away, underwent restoration at the bidding of the Pope. A mostra, a monumental dedicatory fountain built by ancient Romans to mark the point of arrival of an aqueduct, was a custom which was revived by Nicholas V. The present-day location of the Trevi Fountain was previously occupied by a wall fountain commissioned by the Pope and constructed by the architect Leon Battista Alberti. The aqueduct he had refurbished included modifications and extensions which eventually allowed it to supply water to the Trevi Fountain as well as the renowned baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona.
