Roman locals and site seers who appreciate conversation as well as being the company of others still go to this spot. The streets surrounding his water fountain have come to be one of the city’s most fashionable gathering places, something which would certainly have pleased Bernini himself. In around 1630, Pope Urbano VIII helped Bernini launch his career with the construction of his first water fountain. The fountain’s central motif is based on an enormous ship slowly sinking into the Mediterranean Sea. According to 16th century documents, a great flood of the Tevere covered the entire area in water, an event which was memorialized by the magnificent fountain. In what turned out to be his only prolonged absence from Italy, Bernini {journeyed | traveled] to France in 1665.

In order to make Rome worthy of being the capital of the Christian world, the Pope decided to embellish the beauty of the city. At the bidding of the Pope, the Aqua Vergine, a ruined aqueduct which had carried clean drinking water into Rome from eight miles away, was restored starting in 1453. The ancient Roman custom of building an imposing commemorative fountain at the point where an aqueduct arrived, also known as a mostra, was restored by Nicholas V. The architect Leon Battista Alberti was commissioned by the Pope to put up a wall fountain where we now see the Trevi Fountain. Modifications and extensions, included in the restored aqueduct, eventually supplied the Trevi Fountain and the well-known baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona with the necessary water supply.
