Anglo-Saxon Grounds at the Time of the Norman Conquest

Anglo-Saxon Grounds at the Time of the Norman Conquest The Anglo-Saxon way of life was significantly changed by the introduction of the Normans in the later eleventh century. The Normans were much better than the Anglo-Saxons at architecture and horticulture when they came into power. But before focusing on home-life or having the occasion to think about domestic architecture or decoration, the Normans had to subjugate an entire population. Castles were more fundamental designs and often erected on blustery hills, where their people spent both time and space to practicing offense and defense, while monasteries were considerable stone buildings, commonly situated in the widest, most fertile hollows. The sterile fortresses did not provide for the quiet avocation of gardening. Berkeley Castle, maybe the most unspoiled model of the early Anglo-Norman style of architecture, still exists now. The keep is thought to date from the time of William the Conqueror. An enormous terrace encompasses the building, serving as an impediment to attackers trying to excavate under the castle walls. On one of these terraces lies a charming bowling green: it's coated in grass and flanked by an old yew hedge that is formed into the shape of rough ramparts.
