The Source of Modern Day Fountains
The Source of Modern Day Fountains Pope Nicholas V, himself a learned man, ruled the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455 during which time he commissioned many translations of old classical Greek texts into Latin.
It was important for him to embellish the city of Rome to make it worthy of being called the capital of the Christian world. In 1453 the Pope commissioned the reconstruction of the Aqua Vergine, an ancient Roman aqueduct which had carried fresh drinking water into the city from eight miles away. A mostra, a monumental celebratory fountain constructed by ancient Romans to mark the point of entry of an aqueduct, was a practice which was restored by Nicholas V. At the behest of the Pope, architect Leon Battista Alberti undertook the construction of a wall fountain in the place where we now find the Trevi Fountain. The Trevi Fountain as well as the renowned baroque fountains found in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona were eventually supplied with water from the altered aqueduct he had rebuilt.

Outdoor Garden Fountain Engineers Through History Frequently working as architects, sculptors, designers, engineers and cultivated scholars, all in one, fountain designers were multi-talented people from the 16th to the later part of the 18th century. Leonardo da Vinci as a innovative intellect, inventor and scientific virtuoso exemplified this Renaissance creator. He systematically annotated his observations in his now much celebrated notebooks about his research into the forces of nature and the attributes and motion of water. Combining creativity with hydraulic and horticultural mastery, early Italian water fountain designers transformed private villa settings into brilliant water exhibits loaded with emblematic meaning and natural wonder. The splendors in Tivoli were created by the humanist Pirro Ligorio, who was famed for his capabilities in archeology, engineering and garden design. For the many properties in the vicinity of Florence, other water fountain designers were well versed in humanistic subjects as well as ancient scientific texts, masterminding the excellent water marbles, water highlights and water antics.
