Archaic Greek Art: Garden Statuary The initial freestanding sculpture was developed by the Archaic Greeks, a recognized achievement since until then the only carvings in existence were reliefs cut into walls and pillars. Younger, appealing male or female (kore) Greeks were the subject matter of most of the sculptures, or kouros figures. The kouroi were seen by the Greeks to represent beauty and were sculpted with one foot leading and an uncompromising rigidity to their forward-facing poses; the male statues were always strapping, brawny, and nude. Around 650 BC, life-size variations of the kouroi began to be observed.
The Archaic period was turbulent for the Greeks as they progressed into more sophisticated forms of government and art, and gained more information about the peoples and cultures outside of Greece. Throughout this time and other times of historic tumult, encounters often happened, including battles fought amongst city-states such as the Arcadian wars and the Spartan infiltration of Samos.
