The Major Characteristics of Ancient Greek Statues The Archaic Greeks developed the very first freestanding statuary, an impressive achievement as most sculptures up until then had been reliefs cut into walls and pillars. Youthful, attractive male or female (kore) Greeks were the subject matter of most of the sculptures, or kouros figures. The kouroi were believed by the Greeks to represent beauty and were sculpted with one foot leading and an uncompromising firmness to their forward-facing poses; the male statues were always strapping, sinewy, and nude.
Life-sized versions of the kouroi appeared beginning in 650 BC. A substantial period of transformation for the Greeks, the Archaic period helped bring about newer forms of state, expressions of art, and a greater comprehension of people and customs outside of Greece. But these disputes did not stop the growth of the Greek civilization. {

The common fountains of today bear little resemblance to the very first water fountains. A natural stone basin, carved from rock, was the first fountain, used for holding water for drinking and spiritual functions.
Stone basins as fountains have been recovered from 2,000 B.C.. The earliest civilizations that used fountains depended on gravity to push water through spigots. Drinking water was supplied by public fountains, long before fountains became ornate public monuments, as beautiful as they are functional. The people of Rome began building decorative fountains in 6 BC, most of which were bronze or natural stone masks of animals and mythological heroes. Water for the public fountains of Rome was delivered to the city via a complex system of water aqueducts.

Building a mostra, a grandiose commemorative fountain built by ancient Romans to memorialize the entry point of an aqueduct, was a tradition revived by Nicholas V. The present-day location of the Trevi Fountain was formerly occupied by a wall fountain commissioned by the Pope and constructed by the architect Leon Battista Alberti. The water which eventually provided the Trevi Fountain as well as the famed baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona flowed from the modified aqueduct which he had renovated.
