Public Garden Fountains Lost to History The water from springs and other sources was initially supplied to the inhabitants of nearby towns and municipalities via water fountains, whose purpose was largely practical, not aesthetic.
In the years before electric power, the spray of fountains was driven by gravity alone, often using an aqueduct or water supply located far away in the nearby mountains. Inspiring and spectacular, big water fountains have been crafted as memorials in nearly all societies. Simple in design, the 1st water fountains did not appear much like present fountains. The first known water fountain was a rock basin carved that was used as a receptacle for drinking water and ceremonial purposes. The original stone basins are believed to be from around 2000 B.C.. Gravity was the power source that controlled the initial water fountains. Drinking water was delivered by public fountains, long before fountains became elaborate public statues, as attractive as they are functional. Animals, Gods, and spectral figures dominated the early decorative Roman fountains, beginning to appear in about 6 BC. A well-designed system of reservoirs and aqueducts kept Rome's public water fountains supplied with fresh water.

The Dissemination of Water Feature Design Technology Instrumental to the development of scientific technology were the printed papers and illustrated publications of the day. They were also the primary means of transferring useful hydraulic ideas and fountain design suggestions throughout Europe. In the later part of the 1500's, a French water feature architect (whose name has been lost) was the internationally distinguished hydraulics pioneer. With Royal mandates in Brussels, London and Germany, he began his work in Italy, building expertise in garden design and grottoes with incorporated and clever water features. In France, towards the closure of his lifetime, he published “The Principle of Moving Forces”, a book that became the essential text on hydraulic mechanics and engineering. The publication updated key hydraulic advancements since classical antiquity as well as detailing modern day hydraulic technologies. The water screw, a mechanical way to move water, and invented by Archimedes, was showcased in the book. Natural light heated up the liquid in two concealed vessels adjoining to the ornamental water feature were shown in an illustration. What occurs is the heated water expanded, goes up and locks up the conduits leading to the fountain, consequently leading to stimulation. Pumps, water wheels, water features and garden pond designs are mentioned in the book.
