Water Delivery Strategies Early Rome 5508988028170460.jpg Water Delivery Strategies in Early Rome Rome’s very first elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was built in 273 BC; prior to that, people residing at higher elevations had to depend on local springs for their water. If inhabitants living at higher elevations did not have access to springs or the aqueduct, they’d have to rely on the remaining existing technologies of the day, cisterns that accumulated rainwater from the sky and subterranean wells that drew the water from under ground. Beginning in the sixteenth century, a newer system was introduced, using Acqua Vergine’s subterranean portions to provide water to Pincian Hill. As originally constructed, the aqueduct was provided along the length of its channel with pozzi (manholes) constructed at regular intervals. During the some nine years he owned the residence, from 1543 to 1552, Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi employed these manholes to take water from the channel in containers, though they were originally established for the purpose of cleaning and servicing the aqueduct. Apparently, the rainwater cistern on his property wasn’t enough to meet his needs. To give himself with a much more practical way to obtain water, he had one of the manholes opened, providing him access to the aqueduct below his residence.
