"Old School" Fountain Designers Fountain designers were multi-talented individuals from the 16th to the late 18th century, often working as architects, sculptors, artists, engineers and highly educated scholars all in one. Exemplifying the Renaissance skilled artist as a imaginative genius, Leonardo da Vinci performed as an inventor and scientific specialist. The great flooding of the Tevere that blanketed the whole region with water in the 16th was memorialized by this momentous fountain as recorded by documents dating back to this period. In 1665, France was graced by Bernini's only extended journey outside of Italy.
